Sussex Uni students vote to oust military from students union

Captain Pugwash | 14.11.2008 19:38 | Smash EDO | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Social Struggles | South Coast

Yesterday, students at the students union agm voted to support a motion to withdraw support for all military funded bodies.

During the debate two students opposing the motion stated that "the whole room are hippies" and that racism, sexism and homophobia were endemic in "the uneducated" element of the population that the armed forces recruit from. The students were angrily shouted down by the meeting.

The vote means that the student population has banned the miltary from any student union events including recruiting at freshers fair.

The students from sussex express their solidarity to all the groups campaigning against the military on campuses.

the vote was inquorate

by this point in the agm, there were less than 405 students in the room meaning the meeting was inquorate and any votes were indicative only. therefore the decision made at agm is not binding. the motion will go before union council for ratification, who will likely put it to a referendum given that the vote was fairly close and there were only c. 200 students in the room.

its good that antiwar students defended the idiots calling them hippies & implying all soldiers are racist, homophobic & uneducated.

the vote wasn't at all close, and the meeting was only inquorate by about 10 people at the time
