Who is organising this?

It they were open and honest people might actually respect them

These are "initiatives" to get people to talk to the police.
 http://www.merseyside.police.uk/html/livnorth/initiatives/general/22-09-YCM.htm

Were the Police to do things such as helping people rather than arresting them for the most petty offences

 http://www.merseyside.police.uk/html/livnorth/initiatives/e1/23-09-ropewalks.htm

where police discretion and a polite "do not park there" might actually work magic. Increasingly those in uniform are becoming distressing and alarming to even the most pro-police individuals. Which is why there is an increased need to have "community initiatives".

How about this for an initiative: stop intimidating people. Stop alarming people whose only interest is in participating in society. Stop erecting arbitrary areas (designated zones) in which police officers are "exempt" from the law that forbids alarming and distressing behaviour - such as in the city centre

 http://www.merseyside.police.uk/html/livnorth/initiatives/e1/06-08-designated-areas.htm

The police are using these meetings to justify their repeat, offensive, distressing and alarming antisocial behaviour.

Just gangsters

They're just gangsters operating an extremely lucrative protection racket. It never pays to get involved with them.

Your Community Matters

The events are organised by Liverpool Community Network which is a rep organisation for 2000 community, voluntary and faith groups across the city.

The problem with some of the comments above is that they offer no solution - I mostly agree with what you say about the police - but all I see are a load of lefties or anarchos or greeny people huddled together shouting from within their little comfort zones, moaning about the way things are. Its easy to do that. You don't have to take risks - the rest of the world is a scarey place for you. I think people would be surprised at how many decent people there are in communites fighting for a better world.
