If you read this actually rather perceptive article carefully, you'll see that "the air of Celtic romance that seems to envelop the Irish even when they're at their most vicious" does not characterise the Irish but refers to the reactions of a certain type of gullible, usually left-wing Brit.

The thousands bellowing explicit and violent anti-Irish racism at Ibrox every other week, and carrying it into the streets afterwards, are a much more substantial threat than any witterings of metropolitan liberals in the Guardian, misunderstood or not.
