Apocalyptic vision of the Hummer

A Hummer with wagon wheels features at a London art fare

So keen for publicity, Hummer have willingly publicised a clearly apocalyptic vision of their vehicle. With oil supplies dwindling, is this an acknowledgement by Hummer that those who own the vehicle will have to purchase a horse or two to drag it around?

This HUMMER H3, complete with wooden wagon wheels and barely fitting into a parking bay, features in the Zoo Art Fair (17-20 October) at the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Hummer have been so keen to have a presence at Zoo they have forgotten (or maybe never knew) the ability of art to serve as critique. Accustomed to their predictable 'guided missile' (ed. no pun intended!) marketing strategies in the mainstream media they seem to have assumed they could commission a 'piece' without it back firing.

Beware of any claim to 'viral marketing' - I've not seen a single mention of this work on the web that suggests a subsequent purchase of one of these ugly monsters. In fact quite the opposite - the marketing execs at Hummer have proven their ignorance - and demonstrated just how far removed they are from the real world of climate change, credit crunch and peak oil.

Let's just hope they DON'T get the sack and continue spending more money, and commissioning more bloopers - or as they should now be called 'HUMMERS' (def. - a marketing cock-up, an easily re-appropriated marketing device)
