More than 722,000 samples were added to the National DNA Database last year - a record increase for one year. The database has samples from some 4m people and is the world's largest per head of population.

A report published by the National Policing Improvement Agency states that DNA "makes a very small contribution" to the total number of crimes detected, and that DNA data is held on 39000 under-18s who have been convicted of no crime. Well, some of them might be terrorists. You can't be too careful it seems.
