2nd Annual Working Class Bookfair Sat 22 Nov 2008 12 - 4pm

Cl@ss W@r | 03.10.2008 22:18 | Analysis | History | Social Struggles

In an age when left and anarchist bookshops have been closing, here is an opportunity to get some literature in the North East.

2nd Annual
Working Class Bookfair
Sat 22 Nov 2008 12 - 4pm
Durham Clayport (central) Library
Millennium Place, Durham City

Same event includes: 2.30pm - the Northern launch of the new book by
Dave Douglass

You are invited to visit the 2nd Ever North East Working Class Bookfair,
sponsored by North East area NUM and the IWW.

There are no bookshops in the North East for working class people to
view our history and contemporary movements’ literature, and so building
on the success of the first bookfair last year, we are launching the 2nd
Working Class Bookfair (no ‘business studies’ books allowed!).

Cunningly placed after the ‘Big Meeting’ in the run up to Christmas in
central Durham city. This event will be popular as a place to; meet like
minds, get up to date books and magazines, learn of future movement
events and it is at a time suitable for the purchase of presents. There
will also be a social event, talks, and/or entertainment booked for the
evening, to be confirmed.

The range of local groups invited includes; political groups, Trade
Unions, community groups, campaign groups, and history societies.

A Life For Peace and Socialism

by Archie Potts

A biography of Konni Zilliacus, based on original research, drawing on interviews and private sources. It reveals his links with Arthur Henderson, Hugh Dalton and Philip Noel-Baker; relates his life in the Far East and Vladivostock in the era of the Russian Revolution; his work for the League of Nations against fascism in the 1930s; and as a prolific pamphleteer under the pseudonym 'Vigilantes'.
He was elected as a Labour MP for Gateshead in 1945, but expelled by Labour for opposing Ernest Bevin's Cold War politics. Readmitted, he was elected as a Manchester Labour MP in 1955. He met Stalin, Tito, Krushchev and Castro.

'I strongly recommend this book as a contribution to the understanding of international affairs and to an important aspect of Labour history.' Stan Newans, The Morning Star.
Archie Potts has done the Left a great service with his very well researched biography of this outstanding but hitherto neglected socialist and internationalist. Zilly's life is an inspiration to all on the Left in these difficult times. What Next.
'It is a book that can be heartily recommended'. North East History.
Illustrated.

didn't you recently make a number of postings about how the anarchist book fair was a "farce" and how you where somehow god's gift to the class struggle movement?
just a little confused as your "working class book fair" sounds alot like the anarchist book fair you where slagging off last week?

confused

Durham is not a working class town!!

07.10.2008 09:45

Good effort to sort out a book stall in the north you are right that there is a lack of radical info, but why Durham? it's a total toff town, full of uni rarfs! why not ushaw moor, brancepeth or even toon?? or you could try ashington where yet another awful opencast coal site has been given the go ahead much to the dismay of the local working class community! maybe the folk in ashington could do with some solidarty in their struggle against capitalism.

Various reasons

07.10.2008 19:55

The North East is a large place, and people do not travel well in the North East. Given the large working class presence in 3 cities Boro, Toon, Sunderland, and given that there is too much concentration on Newcastle in the region. It was decided to follow in the Big Meeting tradition and go for Durham, which is equi-distant for the 3 cities, and given that we are sponsored by North East NUM this makes sense too. This it was felt was a neutral venue, and given that there is antipathy between the cities, we are not 'queering the pitch'.

The political left does not travel well either, does not take part in other entire North East region forums, and this is an attempt to Network across the North East, which is being achieved very well.
