Students mobilise against racism on campus

Notts IMC | 03.10.2008 19:57 | Anti-racism | Education

Students gathered on Thursday to discuss the disgraceful action of Nottingham National Union of Students (NUS) Executive member Craig Cox who held up a sign saying "Bring Back Slavery" at an NUS event. The feeling was that this was a sad reflection on the ignorance and racism that exists in the university and that Cox must be removed from his position.

Nottingham's Black Student Officer - Bayo Randle, Nottingham's International Student Bureau President - Hannan Azhar, the NUS Black Student Officer - Bellavia Ribeiro-Addy, Rendezvous-Victory representative - Kofi Klu and Delroy Brown of the National Black Caucus were united in their condemnation of Cox and called for students to remove him from his post. You can download a recording of their speeches from the links in this article.

The well attended meeting concluded in a long debate during which a strategy for proceeding was discussed and agreed on. Those involved are clear that they will not allow a dangerous precedent of inaction to be set in this case. If Cox is not removed it will be a damning condemnation of the anti-racist movement and will condone the deplorable antics of Cox and those like him. We must say "Never again!" to slavery and the mindset that created it.
