Peace Now | 29.09.2008 15:23 | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Iraq

Don't be square - on Saturday BE THERE! Show your strength of feeling against American Missile Defense at Menwith Hill near Harrogate. This US system, which Brown quietly said yes to in 2007, is making huge waves in Eastern Europe. Poland has agreed to missiles and the Czech Republic, despite its people against, has agreed to the US radar component. Russia is already comparing these plans to the Cuban Missile Crisis...

Missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic.

29.09.2008 18:17

The USA is to site missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic with the permission of the governments of those countries. The people of those countries can vote in a government that will promise to remove the missiles and they'll be removed, just as the US moved military forces out of France when the French told them to go.

How different this situation is to what happened under the Soviet Empire, when the people of Poland and the Czech republic had no say whatsover about the Russian military domination and occupation of their countries.

Have your demo, but remember that the missiles at Menwith Hill are here with the British peoples permission. You are in a tiny minority and entitled to your views, but in a democracy the rest of us can choose to ignore you.

Pete

Factual corrections; "democracy"

Just to clarify, there are no plans to my knowledge for the USA to site missiles in the UK or the Czech Republic. The intention is for radar and tracking facilities in those countries to be used as part of the U.S.'s so-called "Missile Defence" programme. This is already happening at RAF Fylingdales in Yorkshire. Poland will host interceptor missiles.

As regards democracy, the inclusion of NSA / RAF Menwith Hill, Yorkshire in the U.S. system was announced here last year on the last day of parliament before the summer recess, with no debate or vote in parliament, never mind a referendum. Call me delusional, but that's not exactly my idea of a thriving participatory democracy.
