Help Needed: Coal extraction must be stopped

Katerina Sourbi | 17.09.2008 16:16 | Climate Chaos

Nottingham Against New Coal (N.A.N.C.) is a new group recently set up in Nottinghamshire to oppose the proposed building of new coal fired power stations and open cast mines in Notts and is opposing the reclamation of coal on a former Langton Colliery spoil heap on Beufit Lane, Near Pinxton.

ATH Regeneration Limited have put in an application 3 October 2007 (Application Number ES/1091) on a former Langton Colliery spoil heap on Beufit Lane, Near Pinxton exists, which is west of Kirkby in Ashfield and approximately 15 miles by car to Nottingham.

They plan to extract 445, 000 tonnes of indigenous coal over the course of approximately three years. In addition, there will be 50-54 HGV journeys per day through the nearby village of Pinxton in Derbyshire and then on to Junction 28 of the M1, about 3 journeys per hour.

ATH Regeneration Limited is the third largest producer of coal in the UK producing over 2 million tonnes per annum. Profits of £28.1 million were made within a six month period until 30 March 2008 selling 787,000 tonnes to buyers. The Group has supply agreements with Drax Power, E.ON UK plc and EdF. E-On UK own and operate Ratcliffe on Soar power station which was the target of activists last year protesting about coal fired power generation and its effect on climate change.

The total site area will be 30.1 hectares and mine will be clearly visible by motorists on the M1 and by Pinxton residents as well as locals who live across the road from the spoil heap.

This planning application clearly ignores warnings from Jim Hansen, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies who states in a letter to Gordon Brown in 2007 that, "The single greatest threat to the climate comes from burning coal. Coal-fired generation is historically responsible for most of the CO2 in the air today - responsible for about half of all carbon dioxide emissions globally".

If you wish to show your opposition N.A.N.C. are asking people to attend a Committee Meeting which will be held by Councillors.
