The Palestinian President and the Israeli Prime Minister have discussed a number of negotiation issues today. Meanwhile, the Hamas-led police forces in Gaza have carried out a raid on a Gaza neighborhood, killing 12 Palestinians. These stories and more are coming up, so stay tuned.
The News cast
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, continued discussing some of the most contentious issues from their stalled peace talks, on Tuesday in west Jerusalem.
The discussions come as Olmert is preparing to leave his post, after a series of corruption charges were brought against him.
The two sides should reach an agreement by the end of this year, if the vision of the outgoing U.S administration goes to plan.
For their part, Israeli officials at the Prime Minister's office hinted today that Olmert may approve the release of 200 Palestinian prisoners as a goodwill gesture to Abbas during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Despite of the occasional release of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, the number languishing within its jails continues to grow, as the army continues to kidnap more. There are currently 11,000 Palestinian prisoners – including women and children – in Israeli jails.
In the meantime, in Gaza city, the Hamas-led police forces killed 12 Palestinians - including one child – on Tuesday. A police statement confirmed that the killings were part of search for a number of suspects.
Most of those killed in the raid were members of the Doghmush family, which is one of the most influential clans in Gaza City.
This raid comes at a time when representatives from the main Palestinian factions are preparing to go to Cairo for another round of rapprochement talks between the rival Fatah and Hamas parties.
On Monday, a policeman was shot dead in Gaza city by three criminals. The latest confrontation took place when police tried to arrest them.
