Free West Papua Campaign :: September Update ::

Free West Papua Campaign | 15.09.2008 15:45 | Repression | Social Struggles

This months update includes developments for the forthcoming 'International
Parliamentarian for West Papua', news of an upcoming interview with Benny and
Maria Wenda on BBC Radio 3, the date of the September Indonesian Embassy vigil,
and developments on the postcard campaign.

INTERNATIONAL PARLIAMENTARIANS FOR WEST PAPUA
Wednesday 15th October will be a landmark day in West Papuan history. Exiled
West Papuan independence leader Benny Wenda will be joined by parliamentarians
from across the world for the launch of 'International Parliamentarians for
West Papua' at the Houses Of Parliament in London. Over the past few months,
the issues surrounding West Papua have been gaining substantial support from
all walks of political life.
The launch will be co-hosted by Andrew Smith MP & Lord Harries. The aim of the
group will be to co-ordinate international parliamentary action on West Papua.
A decade ago the 'International Parliamentarians for East Timor' group played a
very significant part in bringing East Timor to international attention in the
run up to its indepedence from Indonesia. We very much hope that 'International
Parliamentarians for West Papua' will do the same for West Papua.
Please come and join us on this historic day - 15th October. There will also be
music outside the House of Parliament from West Papuan group Mambesak who will
be coming over from Holland for the occasion.

THE LANI SINGERS
Benny and Maria Wenda of the Free West Papua Campaign perform traditional West
Papuan music as the Lani Singers. They have played widely at a number of UK
festivals and events this year, and have been invited for an interview and
session on BBC Radio 3's 'World Routes' show, to be broadcast on Saturday 27th
September at 3pm.
You can listen to the show on national radio in the UK (90-93FM) or online
anywhere in the world through the BBC website.
The debut album from the Lani Singers will be released on Dancing Turtle
Records on November 10th. Before then you can see them perform and speak at the
following events:

19 September 8pm - St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace,
London
17 October 3pm - Reading International Festival, Reading
18 October 1pm - Musicport 08, Hull

If you are interested in having the Lani Singers come and perform at an event,
please contact us at  office@freewestpapua.org

MONTHLY VIGIL
A monthly vigil has taken place outside the Indonesian Embassy in London for
the past 18 months. This will continue until West Papua gains independence from
Indonesia.
Please come and join us this month on September 24th from midday till 3pm at
the Indonesian Embassy, 38 Grosvenor Square, London, W1K 2HW.

POSTCARD CAMPAIGN
Over 15,000 people have so far sent postcards to the Indonesian Embassy in
London calling for immediate internationally-mediated dialogue, without
pre-conditions, with representatives of the West Papuan people in the search
for a peaceful and just resolution to the West Papua conflict, and for the
immediate release of Filep Karma and Yusak Pakage. Both were imprisoned in West
Papua for 15 years. Their crime was for peacefully raising the Morning Star
flag of West Papua.
Please continue with the pressure on Indonesia, either by asking us for more
postcards (email us at  office@freewestpapua.org) and giving them to friends, or
by writing to the Ambassador, expressing your outrage that people in West Papua
are being killed and imprisoned for peacefully raising a flag. Estimates are
that 500,000 innocent people have been killed since the occupation of West
Papua.

PLEASE DONATE
The Free West Papua Campaign is a small, volunteer run organisation - nobody
takes any wage for their time. All monies raised through the campaign are used
to support West Papuan refugees and to help with the running of the UK campaign
(eg. travel costs for events and talks, and office overhead costs).
Please, if you feel able to make a donation to the campaign, be it a one off
donation or a monthly subscription, we would be most grateful. The campaign is
totally reliant on donations. You can make donations through our website by
