How should progressives respond to Europe’s immigration anxieties?

rape alarm | 15.09.2008 12:29

Date: 22 September 2008 6.30pm to 8.00pm
Venue: Committee Room 3, Town Hall, Albert Square (just outside the entrance to the secure island site), Manchester

Speakers
Liam Byrne, immigration and borders minister
Anne Diamantopoulou, former European commissioner for employment and social affairs
Patricia Hewitt, former secretary of state for health
Trevor Philips, chair, Equality and Human Rights Commission
Gary Titley, leader, European Parliamentary Labour Party (chair)

Maybe real progressives should go and attend this seminar. Liam Byrne continues his policy of detention, deportation and destitution and migrant right campaigners should go and set the record straight: Liam Byrne is no progressive!

There should be a special worldwide competition for every country to try and pack as many people into as small a space as possible and whoever wins gets... there should be a competition to decide what the winner gets. We should model Britain on Hong Kong, so that half the population have to stay indoors at any one time because there isn't enough space in the street for everybody! We shouldn't discuss immigration policy because it is politically incorrect to do so, and besides, who's gonna take the rubbish and do the gardening and look after the oldies? Re-introduce the Pole tax! Who needs space? Or the minimum wage? Bring em in!

What is a 'progressive'?

Is it someone who holds all the current politically correct views on a subject?

Are they those 'liberal' types who like telling everyone else what they are allowed to think and say and what they are not allowed to think and say?

Edmonds has it covered already

Don't worry Noel Edmonds is on the case I hear. His experiences at Radio Luxembourg
should give him a good insight into the convenient flux of national borders.

Plenty of space on the Channel Islands I reckon. Not for the likes of us though numbplussed
