TCAR calls 2nd Northern March Against Racism on 25th October
TCAR | 07.09.2008 18:23 | Anti-racism | Migration | Social Struggles
Following the success of the first Northern March Against Racism in January and the Conference in June, Tyneside Community Action for Refugees (TCAR) has decided to call a second Northern March Against Racism on 25th October - and we’d like your support. The aim of the march is to continue building links between different anti-racist struggles and to demonstrate our support for these struggles.
In TCAR we are clear that attacks on the rights of asylum seekers are racist. Asylum seekers and other immigrants are being used as a testing ground for new measures of repression. From electronic tagging to the increased use of stop and search, from ID cards to the erosion of workers rights. Attacks on asylum seekers cannot be disentangled from Europe’s increasingly restrictive immigration laws nor from Britain ’s role overseas. Is it not racist to claim that Iraqi civilians are now safe in Iraq when British civilians are not? What, apart from racism, means that British companies feel it is acceptable to plunder minerals from DRCongo amongst other countries, making deals with warlords while the British Government supports dictatorships and sends victims of rape and torture back to die in prison camps?
At a time of economic crisis it is even more important for all progressive organisations and individuals to stand firmly against racism. Racism is and will continue to be used to divide any working class struggle against deteriorating living conditions and where possible to divert these struggles from even beginning.
We are holding an organising meeting on Wednesday 10th September for anyone who would like to actively help with the organisation of the 2nd Northern March Against Racism. This is open to everyone, not just TCAR members. The meeting will take place at the Scrumpy Willow and Singing Kettle Café on Clayton Street in Newcastle , near Woolworths at 7pm.
Hope to see you there!
Together we are stronger!
