Padova. Sept.the 2nd 2008- Legnaro (Province of Padua), another fire breaks out against "the nomads".
Last night a malicious fire destroyed a shed and carousel belonging to the Sinti. Unfortunately the arson killed in a very terrible way a young couple, both Sinti "Giostrai". He was 19, she was 18. They burned alive. Everyone Group and other organizations protecting the rights of Roma and Sinti people more then one time advertised of the alarming growth of racism in the Padua's area, where intolerance reaches very serious peaks, incited by racist and irresponsible politicians and journalists. In the middle of the night, the firemen intervened to fight the fire, but for the two youngsters it was already too late. The carousel was installed at Legnaro for the town festival, from the 20th of August until the 9th of September. At the beginning the authorities excluded malicious intents attributing the disgrace to a failure. In front of the evidence of an attack the mayor of the town, Giovanni Bettini, publicly threw the responsibility of the tragedy on a "regulation of issues between families of nomads-Giostrai, for unknown reasons". The mayor didn't just stop here and also declared, without any scientific prove regarding the dynamics of the arson:" I absolutely exclude that it was an aggression based on racist reasons. The town has nothing to do with this". Roberto Malini
