Nuclear Slush Fund

marianneb | 24.08.2008 19:41 | Analysis | Repression

Nuclear Slush Fund is buying off Cumbrians, lock stock and barrel...Two months ago a question was directed to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority at a conference organised by Core(Cumbrians Opposed to a Radioactive Environment and funded by Friends of the Earth). The question was "how much money has the NDA 'given' to organisations/groups/hospitals/colleges etc over the last 3 years?

The question (under the Freedom of Information Act) is still waiting to be be
fully answered. The NDA's "socio-economic fund" which amounts to £34M with money 'given' to hospitals, colleges, heritage, wildlife countryside groups, Made in Cumbria- the list goes on and on and is a snap shot of every facet of Cumbrian life. £34 million is the tip of the iceberg with more funding streams not included in the NDA's answer such as £10 million to the University of Cumbria.

The money filtering through the NDA includes organisations we are relying on to be impartial and vocal watchdogs on what to do with existing waste, never mind the waste that would be generated from new build on NDA sites. Hospitals, colleges, heritage and countryside organisations should be properly funded by central government rather trying to make the nuclear
industry look like some benign kindly old uncle handing out sweets.

The cost of decommissioning nuclear reactors has risen by £12bn to £73bn+ since 2005 according to the National Audit Office. The NDA have not enough money to do their job of decommissioning without constant bail outs from the taxpayer - so the so called 'socio economic fund' and other funding streams are an insidious PR sideline for what?
Softening us up? A bit like sweeteners rotting the brain!

Is there any organisation in Cumbria which has refused money from the NDA? If so there is a painting of wastwater waiting for them. Wastwater is officially Britain's favourite view - it is also used and abused by the Nuclear Industry with 4 million gallons abstracted daily to cool the existing nuclear wastes at
Sellafield.

Not accepting money

"Is there any organisation in Cumbria which has refused money from the NDA?"

Presumably CORE and Friends of the Earth groups in Cumbria have not been offered or accepted money by the NDA.

NO to Nuclear Shussh money

Absolutely right . Cumbrian FoE groups would not accept money from the NDA....the clean up of toxic nuclear waste is the ONLY thing the NDA should be concerned with.. NOT buying off Cumbrians.

Friends of the Earth - self-righteous as always but not exactly right

I think before green groups like Friends of the Earth start casting those stones and start referring to groups accepting money they should take a hard look at their own support for the Government over carbon trading, their support for Greenpeace, who as part of their sustainability programme at this years Design Show was highlighting building on flood plains as part of their eco home experiment - I was there and heard this girl and you know what some idiot from Greenpeace said, we did not know about it (I think he was referring to the fact that the Thames Gateway is a flood plain and no idiot wants to ensure it, leaving the burden with the taxpayer so not much different to your nuclear scam except you along with Greenpeace would suppport it. you really cannot make up most of your green policies.

Last month some idiot from Greenpeace was trying to get ordinary people to join Greenpeace as part of climate change camp. His argument, well I'm willing to risk gaol, while on full pay and part of his job with the support of a multinational which bails out helping ordinary people at the first sign of trouble unless there is some publicity or it does not upset the wrong people did not feature as part of his arguments.

so ordinary people cannot take money from the unscrupulous, only you can.

Change your own disgusting spots before you start breaking those glass houses. So you think nuclear is bad, so well so do ordinary activists, we are not funded by you idiots, we do it because we have done our own research, we care but we would not trust sell out NGOs like you.

The article was written by an artist not an NGO - I agree Carbon trading is more crapola
