Persons detained solely under Immigration Act powers (Detention)
by place of detention as at 28th June 2008
* A total of 2,315 persons were detained. (90% of capacity)
* 2,240 were held at Immigration Service Removal Centres and 75 at Immigration Short Term Holding Facilities.

* 84 per cent of asylum detainees were male.

* 1,660 persons who had sought asylum at some stage were being detained in the UK solely under Immigration Act powers. This accounted for 72 per cent of all detainees.

* 55 people detained solely under Immigration Act powers were recorded as being less than 18 years old. 40 of these had been in detention for less than 29 days and 15 for between 29 days and two months.

Enforcement & Compliance (Removals)
* In Q2 2008, 15,470 persons were removed, departed voluntarily or left under assisted returns from the UK, similar to Q2 2007 (15,390).
* Of those removed, departing voluntarily and leaving under assisted returns in Q2 2008, 7,250 persons were initially refused entry at port (3 per cent fewer than in Q2 2007), 7,190 persons were enforced removals and voluntary departures after enforcement action had been initiated (9 per cent higher than in Q2 2007), and 1,030 persons left under Assisted Voluntary Return Programmes (22 per cent fewer than in Q2 2007).
* In Q2 2008, 2,745 principal asylum applicants were removed, departed voluntarily or left under assisted returns from the UK, 18 per cent fewer than in Q2 2007 (3,355).
* Including dependants, 2,930 asylum seekers were removed, departed voluntarily or left under assisted returns from the UK in Q2 2008, 20 per cent fewer than in Q2 2007 (3,655).
* 680 asylum seekers left under Assisted Voluntary Return schemes in Q2 2008 (620 principal applicants and 60 dependants), 23 per cent of the 2,930 total for the quarter.

Asylum Applications Quarter 2 (Q2), April/May/June 2008
* The number of applications for asylum in the UK, excluding dependants, increased by 15 per cent in Q2 2008 (5,720) compared with Q2 2007 (4,960).
* Including dependants, the number of applications to the UK increased by 13 per cent in Q2 2008 (6,840) compared with Q2 2007 (6,030).
