Shell to Sea Pirates begin Week of Action against Shell's Solitaire.

Water based action against pipeline construction begins in Rossport

Yesterday at noon a flotilla of sea kayaks reclaimed Glengad beach, Pollathomas, Co Mayo; the landfall site for Shell’s offshore pipeline.

Members of the ‘Great Rebel Raft Regatta’ recently deployed at the E.ON coal fired power station at Kingsnorth in Kent, England, have made their way from Climate Camp UK to Erris, in order to assist Shell to Sea campaigners in their opposition to this pipeline construction at Glengad.

The first wave of the Rebel Regatta arrived today following Marine & Public Information Notices which announced the arrival of the world’s largest pipe-laying vessel, the Solitaire, in Broadhaven Bay, any time from today onwards.

Pirate Ahab of the Rebel Crew states, “It’s unacceptable what Shell are being allowed to get away with here in Mayo. We intend to plunder Shell’s compound at Glengad and board the Solitaire when she arrives in the bay. We take no prisoners. It’s the gang-plank for these boys. This environment needs protection from these marauders of Shell’s.”

Shell to Sea has been a very successful solidarity campaign supporting
local communities resisting the building of a Shell pipeline. Folks from
around Ireland and Europe have continued a campaign of direct action which
has been building momentum.

Now is a crucial time in the campaign. The local community and supporting
activists have sent an urgent call out for people to come out to Rossport
during the next 3 weeks. The time is particularly important now because
pipeline building at sea is about to begin.

If Shell is able to follow it’s timetable to bring the pipeline into land,
this will create massive problems for any resistance to the project in the
future. Shell will be creating ‘facts on the ground’ which will
essentially make it easier to push through a decision on the land route,
which the campaigners have been fighting against.

If you are interested in going to support the resistance or are even a
little curious please come down! If you support the campaign but can’t
make it to Ireland you can come to show support and donate to enable
others to go. Show up and have a good time!
