First time to the Climate Camp march for me. I was stopped and searched twice and stopped 5 times more on the walk from the village to joining the family march. Police were fine to me as an individual BUT I was pretty disgusted by some of their behaviour which was dictated from above: the helicopter overhead in the middle of the speeches, and then on the PA telling the crowd to 'disperse immediately or face force' at 12.50 - that was quite astounding as no request had been made to the crowd to leave before that. Completely unnecessary and antagonistic to a peaceful family march.

I don't see why future attendees should be made to walk through walls of policeman to attend, or indeed leave the march peacefully as we all had to yesterday - disgraceful. Only time I've seen such tactics was in the first anti war demos and they caused bad feeling and were a disaster then.

Did the government purposely choose Yorkshire Police to assist - knowing how sensitive the coal subject is in their history? Unfair on those officers, unfair on the protestors.

Insensitive to South Yorks Coppers?

You forget Betteshanger Colliery - closed by Thatcher at the beggining of the coal dispute and site of some of the most vicious clashes between Police and Miners.

Betteshanger near Deal in KENT has yet to recover and remains one of the most deprived areas in the UK - they are not all up north you know.

I'd suggest that yorkshire polis were there because the 1st climate camp was on "their" patch.
