Climate Camp Watch out the vikings are coming!

Ian Fiddies | 31.07.2008 09:23 | Climate Camp 2008 | Climate Chaos | World

The Swedish climate action group Klimax is on its way to Kingsnorth.

At least eight activists from Gothenburg and I don't know how many from the rest of Sweden are going to try and make it to the camp. There is one quite large problem, Ryanair. Over the last ten years or so Ryanair has flown between Gothenburg and Stansted with ticket prices so low that they have succeeded in stopping all ferry traffic between Sweden and the UK. Boat was, for quite a long time, the traditional way of visiting England for Scandinavians. Those of us with a good credit rating could get a bank loan to cover the price of a train ticket but that doesn't appeal so its out with the thumbs, and a simultaneous middle finger at Ryanair.

Due to the constraints of hitch-hiking the Swedish group will almost certainly not arrive in a group but we're on our way. See you there! Anyone reading this who uses a car please keep you eyes open for hitch-hikers in Denmark, Germany, Belgium and northern France, it could be us.

Ferries to England

There may be no ferries from Sweden to Norway, but there are from Norway and Denmark.

Travel from Sweden to Norway or Denmark can be undertaken by train, road or ferry.

Scandinavian

spotting at least 8 vikings hitchhiking during August in 4 countries aint easy.

Could you narrow the odds down by perhaps carrying banners or making yourselves more conspicious than the many thousands of other Scandinavian hitch-hikers? Try not wearing sandals or shorts. Stoop a bit. Put US flags on your backpacks. Nobody ever puts US flags on their backpacks.

good luck!

hitchhiking has a smaller carbon footprint than a ryanair flight.

The train is now cheeper than both the boats from Stravager and Esbjörg

Scandinavian seaways have stoped putting strangers together in cabins, we could have got together and booked a Klimax cabin but its still over priced.A solo passenger traveling from Scandinavia to the UK without a car needs to fork out about 300 quid, honest, The Germans do have a night train between Copenhagen and Amsterdam for 29Es if you are lucky. Hitch-hiking is always fun, well sometimes at least, but would a STOP GLOBAL WARMING badge really help on the road?
