New Transition Keyworth initiative

Transition Keyworth | 27.07.2008 09:23 | Climate Chaos | Ecology

A couple of concerned residents put on a stall at this years annual village show to see if there was interest in developing Keyworth as a Transition village.

Posters were prepared to explain the Transition Town concept in a nutshell for passing visitors (see text below). A range of more detailed leaflets were also available explaining the science and economics of peak oil, sustainable energy etc. and these proved popular.

By the end of the day over 20 people had signed up to get involved.

At the present time the Keyworth Plan is also being developed and by coincidence the results of the recent residents survey, were presented at the show. These indicated that there was a lot of support among residents for practical things that could form an integral part of the Transition Keyworth strategy. These included supporting local produce and local shops, community composting, a community renewable power scheme and resisting the development of large supermarkets.

The next step will be a public meeting where we can develop our plan. A date has not been decided yet but it is likely to be in early autumn.

If you live or work in or near Keyworth and would like to get involved send us an email and we will get in touch.

WHAT IS A TRANSITION TOWN?

Transition Towns is a fast-growing creative, grassroots movement in response to the twin challenges of Peak Oil and Climate Change.

A Transition town is a community working together to look Peak Oil and Climate Change squarely in the eye and address this BIG question:
"for all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase our resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil) and drastically reduce our carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?

It is not a government initiative. It is all of us – people who care.

Transition Towns are an opportunity to rebuild community solidarity and resilience in the face of worldwide energy depletion.

Let’s re-localize.

Let’s reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and other unsustainable resources.

The goal is an “Energy Descent Action Plan”, to design a civilized transition from an energy-rich culture to an energy-lean future.

If we collectively plan and act early enough there's every likelihood that we can create a way of living that's significantly more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with each other, our collective community needs and our environment.

This can be a positive and life enhancing move away from the fossil fuels addicted treadmill that we find ourselves on today.
