No Borders demo call out: Freedom of Movement for all

No Borders | 25.07.2008 09:41 | Migration

For a World without Borders, States and War! Roll up, roll up...

Across the world we see an unprecedented increase in border management and social control. The UK government are at the forefront of this and they are holding their annual party conference in Manchester, from 20th to 25th September 2008.

The Stop the War Coalition have called for a march through Manchester on Saturday 20th September. We invite all anti-authoritarians, anarchists and all those against states, nations and borders to join the 'freedom of movement' bloc, and to play a trick or two on those clowns in the Labour Party circus. Let's collectively imagine a world without borders and wars and fight together to realise this!

Let's come together on September 20th at 12 noon. Assemble at the northend of Albert Square. Look out for the red and black flags. Called by Manchester No Borders (www.manchesternoborders.org.uk) and Manchester Anarchist Federation ( manchester@af-north.org) [if you need accommodation before or after the demo, email  manchesternoborders@riseup.net]

"Education" comes first?

However worthy you deem your cause (and I'm not interested in arguing that) you seem to be putting the cart before the horse. The problem here is NOT "the clowns in the Labour Party". The problem is the will or 99?% (certainly in tyhe high 90's) of the British people. That's the part about democracy that really sucks, doesn't it? That the decisions, when democracy is working properly, aren't necessarily the good, wise, just decisions that in your greater wisdom you know to be the right things to do. Instead the decisions made, for good OR ill, are the ones that "the people" want.

(as one of your greatest leaders put it, the virtue of democracy is that the alternatives end up being even worse)

Understand what I am saying here? You need to first convince the majority of your fellow Britains to desire "no borders". There's nothing wrong with "taking it to the streets" even before you have the support of the majority. But you need to have SOME numbers.

Please -- I am NOT saying that "civil disobedience" is wrong even when just a "majority of one". But in such cases your action SHOULD be a simple "act of conscience", a symbolic act indicating your dissent. At the present you lack enough support to justify a "pressure" campaign -- engaging in one changes the issue away from the cause itself to the more general one about what sorts of actions are appropriate in a democracy.

Don't bother saying "but we're anarchists". I am too. I'm not meaning that you need formal votes. But you do need some social consensus. If you think you do have some consensus for your position on "borders" you are suffering from self delusion.

Not in any way fooled

So the SWP having screwed up the anti-war movement have now moved onto the asylum protest movement in their latest attempt to sell more papers.

With SWP help I'm sure those sans papiers feel a whole lot safer !

far from impressed

A question

Sort of. Let's hope the turn-outs a lot more convincing than the Croydon non-event. How likely is that?

Fair question, but ...

There's every chance it will be better. For starters we're discussing things already. We're coming up with very level headed and straightforward plans. Secondly, we managed pretty well on the May demo and that was with very little prior effort. Two years ago we got a block of around a hundred on a StW demo. We can do better this time. We reckon a couple of hundred should be a minimum target. Book your places on the SWP buses now for a cheap trip to the wonderful city of Manchester!
