Operation Stop The Monkey Business: Day 4

Stop Monkey Business Coalition | 17.07.2008 17:27 | Animal Liberation | Bio-technology | Ecology | World

Day 4 of the action alerts for the week of action against Nepal's exports of monkeys for vivisection!

OPERATION STOP THE MONKEY BUSINESS DAY 4; Tourism Day 2

INTRODUCTION:--

Nepal is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world and the vast majority of the Nepalese economy is based on tourism, and more importantly unlike Mauritius tourists who visit Nepal tend to be "ethical" OR "eco-tourists". With this in mind we must remind the Nepalese tourist industry what is at stake if their government continues to support the exportation of monkeys for experiments.

PHASE 1 -- Targeting Their Tourism Industry:

Today we will be continuing to contact the Trekking Agencies, Hotels, Tourist Resorts and Travel Agencies which are the life blood of the Nepalese economy...If the tourism industry realises that the monkey exports pose a threat to their business, they will lobby the government and help us to stop the monkey exports!

INSTRUCTIONS:--

Please send a copy of the sample letter to each of the blocks of 25 emails separately. This will reduce the chance of them being caught by the spam filters. The Sample Letter is prepared to inform you about the issue. Please try to personalise it before sending, and don't forget to add your name at the bottom!

If you can take the time to add a picture it will make a big difference because it's quite possible that many of the government ministers don't really know about the horrors of vivisection. India banned the exports of rhesus monkeys 30 years ago because of a set of gruesome images that were circulated showing the vivisection that their monkeys were subjected to, pictures work!

SAMPLE LETTER:--

Dear Sir/Madam,

It is with great regret that I am writing to you to inform you of my decision not to visit your country. I had always believed that Nepal is a country which prides itself on its wildlife conservation efforts, (most notably the Rhino & the Tiger), so I'm sure you can imagine my shock when I heard that your government has actually issued licences for the breeding and export of rhesus monkeys for use in biomedical research laboratories under the Wildlife Breeding Act (2003)!

I have always been led to believe that Monkeys are considered sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and are considerd to be an integral part of Nepal 's heritage, however I was obviously mistaken.

As I'm sure you are aware, monkeys are highly intelligent animals and maintain intricate social structures. Like humans, they have complex emotional lives, care for one another and show love to their babies just as we humans do to our children. Ethically, I believe that using monkeys in experiments that inflict mental and physical pain is both unacceptable and unconscionable regardless of the benefit.

There are now many alternative research methods (methods which don't use living animals) that are capable of providing clinically relevant data and have been proven to be more accurate. However certain unscrupulous scientists are continuing to use animals in their research and are exploiting countries like Nepal for their own benefit.

Research into primate experimentation has demonstrated that the results cannot be safely applied to humans, they are often misleading and are as likely to cause harm to human as to benefit them. I invite you to look at just some of the harm caused to humans because they took medicines tested on animals:

The European Union has begun to phase out the use of primates in bio-medical research completely, however, an increasing number of primates are needed by the USA for bio-terrorism research, which is what the Nepalese monkeys are to be used for. I invite you to consider the fate which awaits Nepalese monkeys when they arrive at American research centres...These monkeys were from Mauritius, but the same fate awaits Nepalese monkeys too:

I have contacted your Government about this matter and I have not receieved a response, therefore I have decided to inform you of my decision instead. I, like many other people, will not be visiting Nepal whilst it sells its wildlife to research institutes to be used in barbaric experiments.

The Government and the monkey breeders might gain from this barbaric industry, but the tourist industry will lose substantially if more people like myself learn of the terrible exportations of monkeys from your country to American laboratories.

I urge you in the strongest possible terms to also contact the Government Departments responsible to voice your concerns at the threat to the tourist industry posed by the export of monkeys.

For your convenience I have taken the liberty of providing their contact details for you here:
