The lorries were turning up at the site at Lamby Way only to find the weigh bridge blocked by workers. The workers took the action in support of two members of staff who had been disciplined. One of the men has now been moved to another job by management, amounting to a demotion, and it is this move which sparked the walk out. Ken Daniels, branch secretary for the GMB union said that the workers wanted the two men to be allowed to continue working together.

Rubbish lorries were unable to dump their waste at the Lamby Way tip, Tremorfa, after around 20 workers blocked a weigh bridge with refuse carts. The dispute, which started at around 7am, ended at around 9.45 this morning after discussions between the staff and management.

Members of the GMB union took the unofficial action in support of two members of staff who had been disciplined over the use of “inappropriate language and generally unacceptable behaviour”. The dispute arose because one of the men had been moved to other duties after the disciplinary hearing, which concluded no further action would be taken.

The argument was resolved after management agreed to review the decision to move the man.

Mr Daniels added: “We’ve managed to resolve it. We are asking for the status quo to apply. The management are going to review the situation in the next day or two and hopefully we will come out with the right result. My members are not going to put up with that in the year 2008.

“If we don’t get the right result, I will be balloting our members.”
