African civil society calls for AU investigation into Zimbabwe human rights abuses
Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt – African civil groups meeting ahead of the African Union Summit in Egypt have called on African leaders to publicly condemn the human rights violations and abuses taking place in Zimbabwe.
The Centre for Citizen’s Participation in the African Union, comprising 63 civil society groups from across Africa, said in a statement that that they were deeply disturbed that that the government had ordered the suspension of the work of civil society organizations despite four million Zimbabweans requiring humanitarian assistance.
Said Yemisrach Kebede, Director of The Centre for Citizen’s Participation: “African civil society is concerned about the rampant and escalating politically motivated and organized violence that has taken place since the March 29th election in Zimbabwe. The general population has been massively disenfranchised by displacement and intimidation.”
The period preceding the run-off election have not met minimum conditions for free and fair elections, and the SADC-led mediation has failed to alleviate or bring an end to the current situation.
In a communiqué to be presented to African leaders meeting at the AU summit, civil society groups recommended that the AU call for an independent and impartial investigation into human rights abuses in Zimbabwe.
Said Ms Kebede: “Basic political and civil rights in Zimbabwe must be restored. The African Union must now broker a multi-stakeholder dialogue to create a political process, which will allow for internationally observed elections to be held as soon as possible.”

They give the impression that they reflect African opinion, but if I said the EU are funding them, would I be wrong?
(The EU is funding organisation that want public participation in the African Union!!?? What's the problem with doing that for the EU?)

I think we can all agree that what is going on in Zim is terrible, but the amount of articles on the newswire about the crisis is pushing lots of other stories off the bottom of the page and let's face it, anti-Mugabe sentiment can be found everywhere on the mainstream media here in the UK, so is it needed to have such a large amount of it here on IMC? I can pick up the Daily Mail, Express, Times, Guardian etc and read pages of these releases as it totally suits the agenda of the British establishment.
The majority of the news stories here have little or no anti-state, anti-capitalist content, being largely cut-n-pasted from elsewhere. Wouldn't it be better for the posters putting these stories up to make a single news item with links to the relevant articles to prevent space being used up so much?
Africa is dominated by scum-bag dictators, and 'The West' doesn't give a fuck about democracy or human 'rights'. Activism based on these features is a waste of time in my opinion, as neither 'democracy' or 'human rights' mean anything to those states supposedly sworn to protect them. - Look at the Gabon, where President Omar Bongo has lived squat over the people since 1967, backed by Western oil corporations as he violently suppresses dissent and lives a life of palatial luxury. Or look at any one of these corrupt regimes propped up by the system which removes them when the puppet forgets it is slave to the puppeter.
Against all leaders- 'authoritarian', 'democratic', 'progressive' or otherwise.

Ms Yemisrach Kebede is the director of CCP-AU, She speaks English and French, you can phone her on 00 201 63 41 64 87 and ask her who set her up and who is behind her. Or if you're shy you could just gawk at her on facebook and see who her mates are.

But let's save you the trouble of phoning her and just read who CCP-AU say they are.
"The Center for Citizens participation in the African Union (CCP-AU) is a platform of CSOs/NGOs aiming to encourage African citizens engagement and participation in the African Union. CCP-AU interim steering Committee is composed by the following organizations: Action Aid - Ethiopia, African Center for Humanitarian Action (ACHA), African Rally for Peace and Development (ARPD), Afroflag Youth Vision (AYV), Christian Relief and Development Association (CRDA), Organization for Social Justice in Ethiopia (OSJE) and Oxfam."
oh yes. imperialist lackeys every last one of them. All you need to do is check out your local OXFAM store and chat to the little old dear behind the counter. Try asking her to sell you something without a plastic bag. Her name is Meryll.
