Gustavo Cabrera a contributor to IMC Rosario in Argentina was attacked whilst covering protests at the university in that city. The assault seriously wounded his left eye. The incident happened on May 23rd as the long standing "correspondent" of the election of the universities rector, a process which began in June 2007, was recording comments and conversation on a MP3 with a well known member of the socialist students' union.
Those responsible for the assault were in turn members of a supposedly "social democrat" group but with suspected fascist leanings, the "franja morada". This attack is not the first on IMC activists in Argentina, nor on student protests but marks an escalation in infiltrationist and orchestrated group violence on campuses.
Cabrera's eye has been saved, but much of his vision has been lost and undoubtedly his ability as well as resolve as an activist photographer will be affected. Recent attempts to demand an explanation or proper investigation of the occurences from the university authorities (rector's office) have not only met with little response but also been object of suspicious surveilance.
