Support Opposition to Hackney Council’s Estate Plus scheme on Tuesday the 1st of

Against Poverty | 27.06.2008 15:01

On Tuesday the 1st of July from 4 – 6 pm Hackney Council is holding a drop in for residents to find out more about the plans, and we want them to see that there is opposition!

Hackney Council plans to raise funds for housing and improvements on existing estates by selling land on estates to Housing Associations to develop. The Council says it wants to sell “under used land”, which as Tony Osbourne (Aspland & Marcon Court TRA) says “is our green spaces and play areas.. [which] are an essential part of our estates and environment”. 66% of people balloted voted no to this idea in the Decent Homes ballot.

While plans to demolish Glascoyne II estate in Hackney Wick under Estates Plus were halted in 2007 by tenants’ protests, now Hackney Council wants to try it on Frampton Park estate, between Mare St and Well St. Six new blocks of flats are planned on Frampton Park, squeezed in between existing blocks, built on garages, a play ground, and next to another playground.

A campaign group has been begun by Tenant representatives who are worried that if Council makes Estates Plus happen on Frampton Park then they will do the same across the borough. There seems to be a high level of opposition to the plans from Frampton Park residents, who don’t want to see their land sold.

The Council have timed their drop in when most people are at work, or still travelling home. Because it is not a easy time to make, if you can make it you are really needed! Please come to the Kings Hall, Frampton Baptist Church, Frampton Park Road, off Well St from 4 - 6 pm on Tuesday the 1st of July, to help leaflet and support tenants in opposing the scheme.
