Tent City Parliament Square.

Unauthorised* 24-hour "Tent City" in Parliament Square to Protest Against Ongoing Deportations to Iraq. There are some 15 tents and a Gazebo now pitched on the grass.
Prior to the camp being set up a campaigner was informed by police that they had been given permission under SOCPA for the demo to go ahead, despite no such application having been made to the police by any of the demonstrators. Recently the police seem very reluctant to use SOCPA legislation to stifle freedom of assembly and expression in the zone around Parliament. Instead other criminalising measures have been used to achieve a similar end and this time was no exception.
Shortly after the tents starting to be erected two people from the Greater London Authority approached campers to inform them that they were in breach of bylaws and could be liable for prosecution. At the bottom of the letter they handed out it was stated that this had nothing to do with SOCPA. Later a copper arrived to verify that this GLA warning had been understood by the demonstrators.
