Yesterday a demonstration against the military incursion into Zapatista communities took place in Mexico City. About two hundred demonstrators marched from the Ángel de la Independencia to the Zócalo (main square) in solidarity with the Zapatistas.
People gathered at the Ángel de la Independencia in Mexico City at 3pm to start a demonstration towards the Zócalo demanding the exit of the army from Chiapas. Last week on the 4th of June around 200 soldiers, safety police judicial agents and municipal police entered Zapatista territory accusing the communities of planting marijuana. The townspeople organised to expel the army from their communities. The military forces threatened people by saying they would leave but come back the following week.
People (adherentes y simpatizantes) from The Other Campaign (La Otra Campaña) called out for a demonstration against the repression in Chiapas. The demonstrators marched peacefully along the avenue Paseo de la Reforma. The police started containing the demonstration and pushed activists while marching. Then denied to walk on the Paseo de la Reforma avenue to the Zócalo; the demonstrations continued across another road towards building of the Home Secretary where banners were hung. After a few minutes the demonstration then carried on to the Zócalo, where a meeting was held.
