The 51-year-old denied failing to comply with a temporary release licence allowing him to travel to Forfar for a shopping trip on May 15.
He denied failing to return to the designated pick-up point and return to HMP Noranside, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The case will call for an intermediate diet on July 10, with the trial due to go ahead on August 5.
Sheriff Veal ordered Bowden to appear.
A police search for Bowden was extended across the UK, with CID officers based at Forfar co-ordinating the investigation with other police forces. He was arrested, with a 50-year-old man, at a farm in the Clydebank area following an operation involving police firearms officers and trained negotiators.
