Julian Bond | 11.06.2008 15:32 | Culture | Liverpool

One of the most influential plays of the 18th century is being brought to stage
at Unity Theatre, Liverpool, by local theatre company Keyhole productions.

'The Beggars Opera' was written by John Gay and broke all box-office records of its day.
Its humorous take on the lives of highwaymen, thieves, pickpockets, fences and whores,
as well as its cutting satire on the corruption of the day, was lapped up by
all sections of society, high and low, and the songs in the play became firm popular
favourites. The play’s influence has continued down the years, inspiring writers such
as Bertold Brecht who wrote a modern version of the Beggars Opera – “The
Threepenny Opera”, which featured the well known song, “Mac The Knife”.

“The Beggars Opera” runs from Tue June 10th to Sat June 14th. Tickets are £7 / £5 concs. from the Unitybox office 708 4988 or online  attickets@unitytheatre.co.uk 0771 684 8894 formore details or email  tomm562002@yahoo.com
