Why not turn the camp into a festival?

02.06.2008 18:18

Why not turn the camp into a free fesitval? That way it would attract thousands more people and get more people involved in the movement. Why does the climate change protest camp have to be so boring and serious like an old Soviet era style Mayday parade.

turn the camp into a festival?

The fact that you find climate change boring speaks volumes about your values. Yes I'm sure making it a festy would attract thousands more people... many of who's main interest would be to get off their faces, party all night and end up pissing, shitting and puking in the hedgerows and leaving truck loads of litter and excrement for others to clear up. And rather than attracting local people to our vital cause as happened last year at Heathrow, the inevitable noise and selfish behaviour from some would keep many locals away and maybe make them side with the fearmongering mainstream media and cops. Climate camp exists for concerned citizens to meet up and work hard together to plan actions to tackle climate change because they have no faith at all in governments to do anything except exacerbate the problem by their "sustained economic growth at all costs" belief systems. Festy types would see the climate change part of the camp as a sideshow to the music. Wrong priority and attitude entirely.

more sorted than you

festival?

there are many festivals - some still free - but only one climate camp. it's not about how many attend its about the ideas and connections that are made there.

oh and quiet though it may have been during the week, Sunday was a party and a half..

it IS a festival!

...a festival of resistance

climate camp isn't boring and serious - it's creative and exciting.

you learn things, make things, meet interesting people, plan and carry out direct action together. it's as good as a summer festival AND it's about remaking the future - what could be better?

Woops, cat out of the bag !

O dear the truth that nobody wanted to mention in advance of this years climate camp, the fact that last years was indescribably boring most of the time. Far, far, far too many pretentious gits preaching at others in the camp and massive pissing contests to see who was the most green.

Don't get me started on that nutcase vegan women who every time she saw an egg or carton of milk sneered and said, "animal essence being eaten" or the weird hippy with dreads who wanted all forms of aviation banned worldwide within three months !

The climate camp was a massive missed opportunity because once again it became an excuse for a small group to decide that they and only they knew all the answers and the rest of us had to listen and agree.

I will be working this year with a small autonomous local group that is more realistic about the issues surrounding climate change and I for sure will not be wasting my time at the climate camp.
