Knitters Do It In Public

K Heppell | 26.05.2008 17:13 | Culture

On 14th June this year like-minded people across the world will come together to do in public something which they usually only do in the privacy of their own home. Knit.

Knitting has grown hugely in popularity in the past few years. There is a thriving online community of knitters and an ever-growing number of knitting circles cropping around the country. World Wide Knit in Public Day is a celebration of this. It’s the largest knitting event in the world, with over 200 groups meeting last year in countries all over the globe.

World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. “Knitting is such a solitary act”, she says. “It’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. WWKiP Day is really about showing the general public that knitting can be
a community activity in a very distinct way.”

Knitters in Manchester are invited to take their knitting along to Exchange Square at 1 o’clock on Saturday 14th June. New and experienced knitters alike are welcome to attend.

Details of local events can be found on the World Wide Knit in Public Day website,  http://www.wwkipday.com

Purposeful knitting?

OK, knitting is nice. But isn't this site about (quote) 'coverage of important social and political issues.' How about getting together to show solidarity with knitters in Palestine, with Zapatista fabric weavers, with Burmese textile dyers? Just a thought.

One of my local Lib Dem councillors, long established in party affairs had her knitting needles detained by entrance security at the last Autumn Conference and had to complain hard to regain use of them in the venue.
