Last Primate Lab in Austria to Close!

One less target for the AR2008 gathering...

It has been announced that the Novartis Vienna lab is closing down in June. There are 24.863 animals still in the lab - 23,000 mice, 1.700 rats, 93 pigs, 52 rhesus and javan monkeys and hamsters. New animal protection laws ban the killing of animals for no good reason and Vienna city council has informed activists of the VGT that the animals cannot legally be killed so homes need to be found, or the animals are being taken to Novartis labs in Basel, Switzerland.

This is the last primate lab in Austria.

Another small, but significant victory:

The Republic of San Marino, an independent state within central Italy and a member of the United Nations and the Council of Europe, has become the first nation to formally abolish animal experimentation.

Following a proposal by the Italian anti-vivisectionist doctor, Dr Stefano Cagno, Massimo Tettemanti and Marina Berati, supported by the San Marino Animal Protection Society, a motion to abolish all animal experiments was submitted to the 60 members of the Great and General Council (the national parliament of San Marino) in September 2007, and adopted by them by a large majority. It is therefore now forbidden by law to experiment on animals in the Republic of San Marino.

Animal activists are very concerned about what will happen to these lab animals, however, we seemed to have run into a dead end. We need contact information for the lab so rescue organizations can help, however we cannot seem to find any. Any help is highly appreciated, thank you.
