Western Animal Rights Network (WARN) have ste up a protest camp outside Westlea Animal Rescue, a charity exposed on BBC's Inside Out programme for animal neglect and financial mismanagement.
Western Animal Rights Network (WARN) have set up a protest camp outside Westlea Animal Rescue after we learned of the animal cruelty and underhand financial corruption at this prison for animals. Westlea Animal Rescue was exposed on BBC's Inside Out programme www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/west (BBC West – May 2nd 7:30pm) where they discover animal hoarding, dirty conditions, little food and inadequate housing for animals and the embezzling of £40,000 which was left for the animals in someone’s will!
After the owners learned of the undercover investigation they said they were going to close down and proceeded to tell locals that they were retiring. We spoke to Rachel Gregg, a local veterinary nurse, who is the daughter of the owners of Westlea and she told us the cats would be re-homed but the dogs were “un-homeable”. We know this to be a lie.
George and Stella Harris, the owners of Westlea have made no effort to re-home any animals from the rescue centre and have even purchased animals which have ended up in cages alongside other animals at the “rescue”. Phone calls were made enquiring about cats and dogs and we were told they didn’t have any available at the moment.
Although the local Cats Protection League have taken the cats, George and Stella Harris stated that they would be keeping the dogs, and other animals (goats, sheep, horses, alpaca, chickens and ducks), as the dogs were too old to re-home. George Harris then told members of WARN that the dogs couldn't be re-homed because they are incontinent.
Western Animal Rights Network have now set up camp on the road outside Westlea Animal Rescue are asking for activists to join us. We have successfully found homes for the remaining Westlea animals, and the owners have agreed to meet with us at 11am on Monday 5th May at 11am. If they will not let us take and re-home the animals then further action will announced this week.
