West Midlands IWW celebrate Mayday in Birmingham

IMCista | 02.05.2008 21:12 | Workers' Movements | Birmingham

The West Midlands branch of the Industrial Workers of the World union (IWW) yesterday organised a Mayday celebration at the Lamp Tavern pub in Birmingham. Decorated with posters and the new, huge IWW banner, the room was packed with members and friends, who spent the evening watching films, chatting and drinking.

The films shown included Charlie Chaplin's classic "Modern Times", which depicts workers struggling to survive in the modern, industrialised capitalist world, and Travis Wilkerson's "An Injury to One", which follows the story of Wobbly agitator Frank Little. Indymedia Birmingham were also supposed to show some shorts about recent local industrial actions (by posties, council workers etc.) but unfortunately this did not happen due to some technical problems.

People had brought lots of home-made vegan cookies and cakes. Loads of leaflets and IWW literature were also on display, as well as black hoodies with white IWW logos printed on for sale.

meanwhile in the crown court across the city 6 vegans spent their 16th week in the doc fighting SOCPA sec 145 in the hope that they will win and fuck this stupid 'anti-protest' law in the name of everyone who wants to protest against anything in the future in the UK.

Still, vegan food was provided by one supporter who attended from near B'ham that came along.

Scrummy

Holier than thou

07.05.2008 13:07

Sooo sorry for having the day off Scrummy.

What would you prefer us to be doing? Getting shot down and beaten to death like many of our fellow workers in the past and present? Maybe taking part in some token one off mayday spectacular 'protest'?

Your holier than thou attitude is well off the mark. You know fuck all about what the people there are invloved in and have been getting up to.

Yes I am vegan, yes I am a long standing AR activist.

I'm sure these 2 things are all that matter to you when judging people.

Get a grip matey.
