Hillcrest / Harlan

To mark World Day for Animals in Laboratories, Nottingham Animal Rights and Veggies joined Loughborough and Leicester Animal Concern (LLAC) at their annual vigil at Harlan Sera Lab Limited, Hillcrest, Dodgeford Lane, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE12 9TE, animal breeders for the vivisection industry.

Hillcrest could be described as a 'factory farm for dogs'. It is in the sleepy countryside protected by razor wire fences, infrared surveillance cameras and apparently unlimited police resources.

Despite a long history of perfectly peaceful World Day protests at this location over many years, it was clear that this year might be different.

One protester was arrested whilst attempting to engage Hillcrest staff in reasonable conversation via the intercom at their security gate, resulting in a call-out of all the resources of the Leicestershire Constabulary!

To deal with the other 14 protesters, who were causing no trouble or offence, over 24 officers and 15 police vehicles, including 2 cops on pushbikes were soon speeding to the scene, sirens blazing.

Whilst Harlan has seen animal rights protests for over a decade, campaigners have never chosen to blockade the road, so were pleased this year to see this job done on their behalf by the police.

However the highlight of the day came when the police were being counted out at the end of the day - including the unused riot van on the back of a breakdown recovery vehicle!

Protesters concerned over the excessive waste of police resources were invited to contact the Chief Constable of Leicestershire Constabulary, and in particular to request, under the provision of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, copies of any videos, still pictures or written notes relating to their attendance.

The animals bred by Harlan-Sera at Hillcrest are destined to suffer in needless experiments.

Following an undercover investigation, the BUAV reported that Hillcrest is part of a major international company with locations throughout the world. It is a breeder and supplier of animals, animal diets and bedding for the research industry, including the notorious Huntingdon Life Sciences.

Alternatives???

26.04.2008 04:42

I like the 'non animal alternatives must be developed' bit. Like vivisection is useful enough to need 'alternatives' to! Not to mention the plug for the BUAV...clearly the establishment STILL has the anti-vivisection 'movement' under its total control. Some things, it seems, never seem to change...I wonder whether these people will ever wake up from the thinking imposed upon them by those who want to see vivisection continue. No wonder the possibility of ever getting abolition seems more bleak than it did decades ago.

Wake up for God's sake! Read Hans Ruesch about infiltration; read about the 'alternatives' hoax.

HR`s thoughts.

26.04.2008 13:14

Hans R`s take on the vivisection problem is interesting and should be taken in context of the `thoughts of the author`at that time. The state IS concerned that Animal Welfare campaigners and anti vivisection are becoming or have become a threat to the gov. income,as can be seen in the draconian SOCPA law 2005 and the increasing use of force and intimidation by the police, under instruction. Therefore protest does work.If a state is prepared to spend and justify the £ millions On policing/arresting/futile cases being brought/the insult to the judicial system and all the other little nuances like,P.c`s getting promotions for their part in the dirty business of persecution and prosecution of ones conscience..well that is proof that they are scared of losing the gravy train, the biggest earner for the gov.pension fund.
The anti-vivisection only persons cannot be distanced from the animal welfare-anti-vivisection persons as both have an intertwined cause and wish to see an end to vivisection per`se.Worldwide.

Divide and conquer is an old ploy.

Hows the arrestee?how many were arrested?

26.04.2008 16:11

is he ok? he keeps getting arrested, people who are abit shy, unsure & dont act collectively on demos do get preyed on by some police units. This comrade of ours has been arrested repeatedly, either keep an eye on him or lets not take him on demo's, its vpainful to his friends& relatives.
People like that are maybe best not encouraged to demo's.
Lets just get people like that to promote Frame & BUAV or paid work, sometimes it seems like their exploited. If more people brought from cooperatives in bulk we would have less of a problem with paying people who fund demos like this. Its a vsad to see activists going on demos from animals then regularly, shopping at tesco & sainsbury, even coop supermarket is better all round.

Yes agreed the more scientific cures for many diseases are already there, but are difficult to patent because they are mostly natural, not synthetic poisons. The basis of the petrochemical snakeoil vivisection industry comes from John Rockefellers snr's dad who was a professional snakeoil salesman. Always eager to diversify, the rockefellers loked at petroluem as a "medicine" & lobbyied with dupont to ban or make it hard for natural cures & fibres like hemp.
Companies like IG farben that ran Aushwitz were about 50% owned by Exxon Mobil-standard oil & contracted to test their "Cures" on women & children. They continue with many false addictive profitable "Cures",rather than proper science & prevention, check independent for recent expose on large body of evidence proving many pharma antidepressants dont work

The answer is the cooperative movement, Rhodelia rosea is an amazingly good value effective antidepressant without sideffects, some other people find St johns wort more effective etc. People are standard pill machines, we are all different, doctors are pushed to give us same dodgy drugs with proper time for diagnosis, which really wastes more time.

Follow-up support - get involved!

27.04.2008 20:15

There will be a reunion with the Leicestershire Constabulary on Tuesday 29th April, with a protest at the opening of the so-called 'great' British Circus, at Glen Parva near Leicester. Lets hope they have enough idle officers to provide a 25+ boost to the demo again!

There will be transport from Nottm - see  http://www.veggies.org.uk/event.php?ref=277

In solidarity with the arrested activist, (who was released later the same evening, but has to report back to the police in July), there will be a demonstration against experiments on animals conducted by Nottingham University, on Thursday 8th May -  http://www.veggies.org.uk/event.php?ref=53

See also past demo report at  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/12/329606.html

btw I see no mention to so-called 'alternatives' to animal 'research' on this article, nor on the source article on Veggies website. Life is too short to search in minute details whether it may have appeared on the BUAV report (which was not 'plugged' but simply quoted as a source of background info on the target company). Rather than knocking anyone with a different take on campaigning against the iniquitous vivisection industry all should join forces against the common enemy.
