Speaker tour - Immigrants Fighting Gentrification in NYC
7.30PM Thursday 8th May 2008 at the Town Hall Tavern, Manchester
Part of the International Campaign in Defence of El Barrio

Movement for Justice in El Barrio is a grass roots organisation of immigrant communities fighting against gentrification in El Barrio (East Harlem) and is part of 'The Other Campaign'.

A delegation from Movement for Justice in El Barrio brought this message down to Mexico and screened it for the Zapatista delegation and the other groups gathered there.

'The Other Campaign' is a movement to change Mexico by uniting all sectors of Mexican society to create a broad national movement from below without taking power or participating in the electoral system. As such, 'The Other Campaign' holds important lessons for people struggling to build a movement for change all over the world. Apart from providing a model for movement building on a national level, the Sixth Declaration also contains, as a seperate initiative, an invitation to the people's of the world to walk with the Zapatistas in building a amovement against neoliberalism and for humanity around the globe.

Manchester Workshop:

In this workshop, a representative of Movement for Justice in El Barrio will give a broad explanation of their campaign and open a dialogue on the effects of gentrification. The speaker will also share how they, as immigrants forced to leave Mexico to come live and work in the U.S. have been organising locally as part of this international campaign to change Mexico and to defend their own neighbourhood.
