More than six out of ten children in Nottingham live in poverty.
About 38,000 under-18s live in families on benefits or low incomes.
In St Ann's and Aspley more than 80% of children live in poor families. Many are cared for by a single parent.
The shocking statistic emerged in a report from the regeneration organisation, One Nottingham.
The research highlights a deep-rooted cycle of poverty on Nottingham's outer estates, affecting generations of the same families.
Studies in north Nottingham highlighted barriers to employment, including lack of childcare, low aspirations and fears that work will pay less then benefits.
