Squatters Estate Agents Opens In London

Reclaim The CIty | 10.04.2008 17:07 | 2008 Days Of Action For Autonomous Spaces | Culture | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | London

As part of the Space Is The Place - Side Stepping The Property Ladder series of events taking place in various London autonomous spaces over the weekend of the 11th and 12th April, a squatters estate agents has been set up.

Squatters Estate Agents, putting people places

The squatters estate agents is based at a new squatted venue in Bowl Court, Shoreditch and opens Saturday at 10am. A display shows a number of empty properties around London along with details about their location, history and suitability for squatting. The properties range for abandoned houses and flats, to pubs, shops and even government buildings. Some would suit small residential squats and others grand large scale housing communities, squat cafes, freeshops or social centres.

During the weekend you'll have the opportunity to meet up with others in need of housing and go out as a group to put the empties of London back into good use. Before the end of the weekend you could have yourself and your friends a new home.

The display boards will also be made available at other autonomous spaces over the weekend and beyond.

It's not to late to contribute to the project. Please submit your own empties lists ASAP to the.rampart AT gmail DOT com

The squatters estate agents is just one of things happening at the new squatted venue in shoreditch and other autonomous spaces over the weekend.

Bring back the Ruff Tuff Cream Puff Estate Agency!

Fantastic! That is a really inspiring development. Reality instead of property porn.
Reminds me of the legendary 'Ruff Tuff Cream Puff Estate Agency for Squatters' started by Heathcote Williams back in 1976/77 around Elgin Avenue in London. That grew big even in those pre-web days- he was soon issuing supplements like 'Desirable Vicarages' - nationwide!
Rumour had it that Ruff Tuff closed down after HW went to ground in the West Country after too much heat in London.

Wonderful opportunity for you

On our books we have a number of highly suitable properties meeting your requirement including some delightful self contained two and three bedroom flats in a very desirable part of the East End. They are newly available on going fast so next week would be a good opportunity for you to view the properties. We can't provide the keys for you but we can arrange for you to met others who moved into neighbouring properties this weekend.

Is there any chance of getting a bigger version of the empty properties picture?

Estate Agency Memories

13.04.2008 07:51

We had a squatters estate agency in Brighton in the mid nineties. It only ran for a couple of weeks (before the local authorities hurriedly evicted us - not without resistance), but in that time we rehoused masses of people including some families. It was a brilliant and inspiring time that I'll never forget - good luck to the new one! As we opened it during Homeless Week it turned into a bit of a media circus, which was useful as loads of people still held the opinion that squatting was illegal until then.
