vehicle share

Pete | 08.04.2008 16:47

For the last few weeks I have been thinking a lot about trying to set up some kind of car-share or van-share scheme and would be very interested in hearing from people who would like to make this idea a reality.

As well as the obvious benefits of a simple scheme of sharing a vehicle, or a number of vehicles between a group of people, I have also got to thinking of some other ways the idea could be taken further.

For example the possibility of modifying vehicles to run on recycled chip fat for longer journeys, or perhaps investing in an electric car for short trips around town; or the possibility of maintaining a small fleet of vehicles which are appropriate for different tasks.

I would like to point out that I am a committed environmentalist and have no particular excitement about motoring, but it has occurred to me that a well thought out cooperative vehicle share scheme could be a good way to provide access to transport to a wide range of people. Also, it may not be an issue of putting new cars on the road, but rather persuading people to collectivise their existing vehicles. I am however happy to be persuaded out of the idea by robust argument.

If there is any interest in the idea I would suggest holding a meeting some time in the next couple of weeks.
