"About 80 firefighters have been tackling a major blaze at a meat plant in Aberdeenshire.

Fire crews were called to the Kepak Buchan plant in Turriff at about 0440 BST on Wednesday morning.

Grampian Fire and Rescue Service sent eight pumps, but the blaze was so large an extra four were sent.

A large plume of smoke could be seen for several miles. Fifteen staff were evacuated, and residents were advised to keep windows closed.

No-one was injured the building at Markethill Industrial Estate.

Grampian Police said there was also a "minor ammonia leak" which was not a cause for immediate concern.

A spokesman said it was too early to say if there were any suspicious circumstances, and an investigation had been launched.

He added: "The fire is now under control. Roads are expected to remain closed until the fire brigade has stood down."

There was livestock, including cattle and lambs, on the premises, but they were not said to be at risk from the fire. "
