Control On The Waterfront

Charlie Cox | 22.03.2008 11:56 | History | Social Struggles | Terror War

Governments and intelligence organisations around the world today try to protect the innocent from harm & injustice. But when our agencies are responsible for wiping out hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women & children’s lives, without reprisal, are they really the one’s we should be listening to, and are the new measures they introduce really going to make this a better or safer world?

On The Waterfront tells the story of a dock worker and former boxer, Terry Malloy, testifying against the mob-controlled unions of the New York docks, despite his brother’s and friend’s involvement. This idealised ‘hero’ in a world of violence and corruption mirrored the actual events of the time, and could be seen as an attempt by the author Budd Schulberg to justify or explain his reasons for appearing before the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) to give up the names of suspected Communists, as did the film’s director, Elia Kazan.

Political tensions at the time resulted in the grossly unjust hearings under the veil of protecting America’s interest’s. Today, similar prejudices threaten our rights to freedom of thought and speech, whilst invading our private lives. Do our institutions really have any freedom loving patriotic voices anymore?
