The twain shall hardly ever meet

The people demonstrating who originate from Turkey, many though by no means all Kurdish, inhabit a world of radical politics that is quite separate from the indigenous left in Britain.

They might be living next door to each other, but rarely do the two types of left encounter each other. Cultural barriers, I suppose (many people from Turkey do not speak English well even if they live in London), some political barriers as well.

HM Government supports the Turkish government and would regard the people protesting here as terrorist sympathisers´- note the photo of the policeman filming the demonstrators.

Police Monitoring

12.03.2008 15:54

FIT (forward intelligence teams) monitoring individuals involved in protest is always disturbing, but perhaps more so in situations where the state is no doubt watching for signs of 'terrorism'. At the very least the intimidatory factor of FIT monitoring is so much greater.

Fitwatch exists to monitor and confront this sort of police intimidation and harassment. Please forward pictures and details of any future FIT activities to us by e-mail or via our blog.
