MCR squats and autonomous spaces

copycat | 02.03.2008 13:09

As the days of action for squats and autonomous spaces are approaching, yesterday a new squatted social centre opened in the city.

With the Basement being out of action for another year, a group of squatters, activists, artists and free party people are preparing for a weekend of squatting, partying and protesting against gentrification, funding cuts for community centres, and self-determined living on April 11 and 12. The next planning meeting is on Thursday, March 6 at 7pm in room 3 of the student union at Manchester university.

In the run up, a new squatted centre has already opened yesterday with a small launch party.

ungdomshuset anniversary

the opening of the new occupied space in manchester was on the day of the 1 year eviction anniversary of the ungdomshuset social centre in copenhagen, denmark. thousands were on the streets in copenhagen last night to show their anger and determination to get a new space. in many cities across europe, buildings were squatted last night, in solidarity.

the squat has still not been detected (despite 3 weeks of work going on inside it), and the occupiers want to keep it that way. sorry if that excludes some people, but news is spreading word of mouth at the moment, so try and ask the usual suspect.

where?

usual suspect?!?!!?

That's so typical. You can't get involved unless you know someone. What a surprise. When will people realize that they aren't really doing anything except making a party space for them and their mates? What are they trying to achieve?

you might find this hard to believe, but the squat is a real home to real people. would you want to post your address all over the internet???
not everything always has to be done to 'reach out', sometimes the people who actually need a place to live come first.

The article calls it a social centre, so I was asuming it would be somewhere for people to go and do some of the things mentioned in the article as well as living there. Of course you wouldnt want your address on the internet but the answer to the first post could have included some way of getting in contact so they could take part as well. The comment about it not always being about reaching out to people doesn't really make sense. Surely by inviting the 'usual suspects' to tell people where it is is trying to get people to go there?

if you contact  manchesterspaceinvaders@yahoo.co.uk, I'm sure they can pass on where it is and what's happening with it.

there'll also be a better advertised space coming up in April for the days of action.
