Otautahi Social Centre Under Threat

Social centre in Christchurch, New Zealand received a 10 day eviction notice.

Another community resource in Otautahi (Christchurch, New Zealand) is under threat. At present the Social Centre, which has been operating out of the old Christchurch CORSO building, has received a 10 day eviction notice ending on the 13th of March.
The building which was created by the local community, over many years, is to be sold by the national CORSO organisation. The Christchurch CORSO was expelled by the National organisation in 2000 and was evicted from the building a few years later.

The Otautahi Social Centre has been organising from the building since July 2007. The centre is home for Food Not Bombs, Radical Cinema, Junk No More Bike Collective, the Really Free Shop, Freedom Computing Collaboration and Otautahi Anarchist Roopu.

We feel strongly that this community resource built up over many generations needs to remain exactly that. In effect the people who worked hard and contributed to the creation of Christchurch CORSO in the early 50's have gifted Otautahi a valuable community asset and it is our responsibility to look after this building and create a better future for all people involved.

We believe that the Otautahi Social Centre Collective continues this tradition and we will urgently campaign to return this building to the community it belongs to.
