The Nottingham Evening Post reports:

The Ministry of Defence has asked Nottingham to lead regional celebrations for National Veterans' Day in June.

National Veterans Day was launched by the Government in 2006 and an event was held in Wollaton Park last summer. [With no counterdemonstration]

Wollaton Park has been chosen as the venue for a 'flagship' event for former servicemen and women across the East Midlands.

It will feature a living history re-enactment camp, a Second World War spy trail, a veterans' badge presentation, a service and march-past salute to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the RAF and the 100th anniversary of the TA.

The full programme will be announced next month, but the date has already been set for the main event - the Veterans' Weekend. The event will take place during June 21-22 at Wollaton Hall, and is being organised in conjunction with both the military and emergency services.

It will also be a showcase for the modern armed forces [recruitment], reserve forces and cadets. An inter-service It's a Knockout competition is planned. It will feature mental and physical challenges such as a gun run, climbing tower, bungee run and relay races.

Local businesses will be invited to enter teams over the weekend [mmM a Peace Team?] and there will be a schools championship on Friday June 20 for years 10/11 (14-16 years)
