Demonstrations and protests continue against Edinburgh Council's 'Caltongate' gentrification

IMC Scotland | 14.02.2008 10:11 | Culture | Repression | Social Struggles

The hotly contested 'Caltongate' gentrification plan has been approved by city councillors on Wednesday, in a meeting that lasted over 10 hours. The two listed buildings will be demolished. Save Our Old Town protesters were present inside the meeting, and there was a demonstration outside the City Chambers all day. Campaigners vow to continue the struggle against this development, and plan to provoke a public enquiry.

EDINBURGH BARRICADES AGAINST INVASION BY OFFENSIVE RUBBISH DEVELOPMENT!!!!!

18.02.2008 06:28

REGENERATION???!!!
Since when has knocking down great swathes of a city overnight been called regeneration?.Was the Blitz regeneration?
If I hire some Caterpillars and knock down my local church/neighbours house with a scale drawing of a Holiday Inn/leisure complex under my arm, am I regenerating my neighbourhood???

Where before in Europe we had war damage preceding building 'development' the majority of which was social housing, now we have 'peace' damage, where private contractors smash whole communities into rubble, change the name of these spaces(Rebranding?-What the **** is "CALTONGATE???)to build Architecturally and Socially Offensive McCommunities for profit with no regard for either the social or cultural patrimony of our FINE city!!!

Its called £££££££££$$££ INVASION.In that MONEY speaks louder than the COMBINED justifications of legal local/national democracy, wishes of the community, areas social function, informed opinion of architects, meeting social requirements, respect for history and cultural patrimony, recognition of aesthetics, literature, beauty, etc,etc,etc.....!!!!
But no. unsolicited, unaccountable forces knock down great swathes of a city without invitation/permission and then rechristen said area according to there own requirements...
to call it GENTRIFICATION!!!!!!!!
That word implies some grace and reference to a classical ideal on the aesthetic front...don't see that in the plans...MORE LIKE TKMAXX GOES TO B&Q WITH AN AMEX....
These developers also 'regenerate' in war zones for immense profit..
They are philistine SCUM!
Edinburgh now has a great gaping HOLE where its pancreas used to be !!
That in itself is a disgrace.
How on earth were they allowed to knock down New Street, the homes of many on the High Street, and the atmospheric surrounding area down in the first place???
Edinburgh has a new Disgrace. And its not on top of (what we can still see of )Calton Hill.

What is the point in having a system of listed buildings if commercial influence can have them knocked down?
It makes a mockery of Edinburgh and its citizens, past and present.
If Robert Louis Stevenson,Walter Scott,Raeburn, Conan Doyle, Graham Bell, SimpsonMacdiarmuid,et al were bodily around right now, the would be at the barricades!!!!!!!REALLY..If we have any cojones we sould all go up to the site and stop it happening. It reallly is the only way.I promise you!Lets humiliate the ****ers!!Really.
