Bristol Indymedia's Radical Revamp - South West Listings - New Facilities!

Bristol Indymedia Editorial Group | 05.02.2008 13:08 | Indymedia | Technology

Today (2nd Feb) we unveil a fully upgraded website. The new site, which encourages readers to post their own local news stories, offers expanded facilities for posting news from all regions of the South West, an improved calendar, better facilities to upload images, video and audio content, a cleaner site design, easier access to the information and more scope for the site to expand.

A Bristol Indymedia volunteer said, “We are really excited by the launch of the new site. It's the result of much hard work by volunteers and we look forward to people using it to tell their stories in their way. This is another step in the ongoing growth of the project – democratic media in action, made by and for its users with no commercial interests and an open and accountable editorial process. It's easy and free to use and we look forward to working with our existing readers/contributors as well as welcoming new people to the site.” Since its launch in 2001 the Bristol Indymedia project has grown year-on-year to become one of Bristol and the South West's most recognisable news websites.

PS: As with any new system, we expect there to be a few bugs.

Please Relist Us As Bristol / South West

05.02.2008 13:57

A couple of requests have been made to UK IMC to change our listing to 'Bristol / South West', but we are still listed as 'Bristol' only, and until we have a 'Bristol / South West' listing, any traffic
from the South West is likely to remain very sporadic and patchy. We have plugged this as widely as possible on previous occasions where we can, but getting UK IMC to relist us is the real missing piece.

Can this message please be passed on to whoever is able to make this change, and acted upon as soon as possible?

Many thanks.

Changed for Front Page, Topics and London Region... sorry for delay.
Other regional pages may take a bit of time to follow as some of that was hard coded into templates... chrisc is sorting that.

Thanks very much.

Also of interest to others in the South West is the long-term possibility that each regional listing could potentially become a collective in it's own right. While we are pleased to be able to provide an extra space for the South West regions, we are also aware of the limitations of having a Bristol-Centric collective. St. Ives, for example is quite far removed from Bristol, while Swindon and St. Ives, as another example, are not even really geographically regional to each other at all.

This would be a long term development, but one we would be very pleased to see happen.

Other more medium terms plans would be to look at the inclusion of blog spaces, which the upgrade will make easier to eventually implement. While blogs are continuing to mushroom as other alternative spaces, Bristol Indymedia could effectively function as a hub for regional blogs to be publicised through. This would enable Bristol Indymedia to evolve alongside, and in harmony, with other alternatives, instead of simply running in parralel to them.
