Humanitarian imperialism of The Independent

"The idea that any individual in any country should face execution for downloading information from the internet is as abhorrent as it is incomprehensible. That this should be happening in a nation whose government benefits from the military and financial support of Western countries, Britain included, should give us great pause for thought. Pervez Kabaksh, 23, is a student at an Afghan university and a journalist. He was arrested last year after downloading material about the role of women in Islamic societies. We can well imagine that the material was not flattering to, or particularly consonant with, some of the precepts of Islam."

My country takes part in the invasion of another country some 3,500 miles away on entirely false grounds, engages in a genocide against its population and after more than six year of occupation, my country’s ‘liberal’, ‘humanitarian’ newspaper launches a campaign against the persecution of an individual by the puppet government of that country to divert attention from what’s really happening there (see the links below).

Sorry to offend those sitting on the fence, but this is nothing but blatant imperialism!

Actually it's a great thing that the Independent is campaigning to save someone who faces excution at the hands of the Afghan regime (which is indeed backed by the US, funny how wonderful they are just because they are not the Taliban!). For one thing it highlights how things have not really changed much in Afghanistan, and how injustice in the name of Islam is OK as long as it's sanctioned by the US (just like in Saudi Arabia).

As for diverting attention, it's pretty well document that the US imperialist adventures in the Middle East and Afghanistan were justified on lies and have been a complete total disaster.

America's Gulag and the "Good War"

" The long-running "progressive" stance on America's 21st century imperial adventures can be reduced to this simple dichotomy: Afghan war good, Iraq war bad. And for all progressives who want to be regarded as "serious," the Iraq war is bad because it has distracted us from the real war, the good war, in Afghanistan. This theme has been sounded over and over by the "progressive" candidates throughout the presidential campaign. It is the opinion of a sizable majority of the U.S. population, which has clearly repudiated the Iraq war but still supports the Afghan war."
