The British government frequently imprisons both adult and children asylum seekers, this is contrary to EU human rights guidelines.
People claiming asylum in the UK are subject to detention at any time while their case is being processed, with many asylum seekers waiting years to be granted indefinite leave to remain.
Fourteen-year-old Meltem Avcil from Doncaster was looking forward to the start of the new school year when she and her mother were woken by immigration officers and taken to Yarl's Wood detention centre in Bedford. They were held there for three months.
